Pirates of the Burning Sea

Published 2010-07-09 by june32nd.

I've been slacking on posts, but I have completed my trial on PotBS and have started a 2 week trial on a f2p called Monato Esprit and when that review comes so will my screenshots as I took no screens of my times on the burning sea. Here's my review of PotBS.

Now this is a very good and great to look at MMORPG, I love pirates and no I've never was into the whole pirates vs ninjas bullshit or anything like that. However, if I was around during the Golden Age of Piracy you best believe I would have been a pirate and a damn good one at that. I got to pick my faction and I choose the Brits, not because I wish I called my friends mate and ciggerrettes fags, but because the Brits seemed liek the under dogs compared to the ruthless pirates. I created my character and he resembled Jack Sparrow - not gunna lie. I picked my server and off I was into the tutorial. I learned how to fight and the basics of the game. I soon found myself doing a ship tutorial and I was off into the game world. Though the game is very pretty and it is an interesting take on a MMORPG that doesn't take the fantasy setting of orcs and elves, like the millions of others. I do have some gripes. I should start calling this blog a review shit that bitches but let's be honest, In any game there is always something to bitch about so I'll bitch and than give the good points.

<begin bitching/>

OKay first gripe. Quests, sure you get the quest you read what the NPC has to say and than you go to complete it. ALl fine and dandy but could you give me a hint of where to find these stones statues I have to collect. I mean really, the NPC tells me to go to each shop and collect these statues and bring it back to him, the Junk Merchant. Okay sure no problem, but there's only about 5 doors I can walk into from the town and I've chatted with everyone and I couldn't find any of these statues. I'm not asking for a quest helper, a la WoW and I'm not asking for a game to hold my hand but come one now. A little more direction such as go to this shop and find this person would help. Not just giving me a list of the statues and saying go get them from each shop. Like I said there we're about 5 doors and about 6 stone statues, maybe I'm retarded.

Gripe number 2. Ship battles. I love this idea there's a few f2p that also offer this feature in a pirate setting but none of them can make it fun. I've played Eve Online and let me tell you fighting anything in that game is BORING. Ship battles are almost excatly like that. however you gotta be mindful of the wind, which is a bitch when you have 3 enemy ships coming at you and you have to turn against the wind to get to them. The wind seems to be hitting you on the one side you need to turn. ON top of that unlike eve where you can shoot your enemy from every side regardless of your position, my cannons would only work if i was facing the enemy ship with them and I had to be basically on top of the enemy to have your cannon button glow to let you know you can fire them. So to sum it up it's a pain in the ass for me at least than fun.

Final gripe, this game gives me an every-thing-is-instances game. the town just doesn't feel like a town more or less a set of buildings set up so you can only enter a few and it was set up almost what felt like a pathway fromt he dock to the "town hall." No matter where you went it was instanced, the quest I was given in the beginning to go defend the city from pirates, i was wiscked away to a instanced zone of the town where everything was destroyed, cool yes but immerson killer, very Age of Connan-ish. no matter where you went there was a loading screen.

I liked the pirate theme and I like the crack the devs took to make an innovated game with an interesting theme, but there is a reason why it doesn't have a large population. And within 2 days you can see why. Sure this might be a short review with nothing but bitching but when a player isn't interested in playing because of his gripes with the game than the player isn't going to want to continue playing. I stuck out my 14 days and I played everyday for about 3-4 hrs.

There are some good points to point out. 1. the graphics are B E A U TI FUL, but it doesn't make up for the lack of depth and gameplay. PvP is a nightmare if your not level cap, 50 and even still I've read on forums than it can still be quite unfair. I like the step into something other than fantasy because really that shit gets so tiring once you've played a large chunk of games that include fantasy one way or another. The sea adventures and the ship battles are yes innovative but boring, sure how fast pace could you make it though, and the wind tho being real is just a pain in the arse sometimes, and boarding enemy towns is also a pain. You need to first clear out a big chunk of the enemies, how do you do this? You sail from side to side making sure you cannon buttons are light up and than you rinse and repeat. I did this side to side shooting for a good 6-7mins before I was told by the game I could now board the base. Only to find out than you basically need to be standing still and be sideways to get your little boarding button to light up. This could have been a bug, but I won't ever know. This review might be short and maybe not so thought out, but as I don't have a lot of time as I must go meet friends to discuss what we are recording tonight. I will rewrite a full and better understanding and organized review tonight once I'm done recording my new song tonight with a few friends of mine.

Anyway, my reviews is IMO, and to truley get a full understanding of the game you must experience it yourself. Bottom line is for a subscription triple A MMO, it's not worth the money for me. Sure my money won't make a difference to them but I also don't like Sony as they seem to just run all their games into the ground for the sake of money.

The Line Graph of our Lives

Published 2010-04-08 by june32nd.

Found an interesting line graph at kill ten rats it really didn't have anything for the entry except this line graph. So take it in, it's quite amusing and little be a sad truth. MMORPGs seem to be leading to the SOLORPG style of playing MMOs. Which is crazy talk since there is no I in team. Enjoy the link and let me know if it hits you in someway.

WTB: A Free to Play MMO

Published 2010-03-28 by june32nd.

Guild Wars. Pay for the box and key get the game monthly for free. I made a ryhme not because I'm a poet and don't know it, It's because I'm the shit and I write ryhmes to kill time. Why should I have to pay 30-50 dollars for a MMO and than be charged $14.99 a month. Sure the first month is free but with some games 50 USD covers both the 30 game and the month and than sum. Now don't quote me but I'm pretty sure I payed 50 for Aion. and 49.99 for each Warcraft X-pac. Seriouosly, what the fuck? In the case of World of Warcraft, let's be honest. To some degree it is a very fun game, but broken down. I was given re-skins of the same old models. Am I looking forward to Cataclysm? It is on my list of Upcoming MMOs to check out I will not lie. I'm expecting change and to be honest I've had no desire to make any alts to level to cap. I've done a Warrior to 60 in classic, raiding got him to 68 in Burning Crusade. He was deleted and the gold was sent to a Priest named Rejuve who I brought to 30 before jumping servers to make a druid who held he same name as the once beloved warrior I once called me. This druid went to 70, never raiding than made the trip through a few revists to the game to make it to 80, never raiding, got my welfare T9. Subscription frozen. I'm done with WoW and I'm done with the subscription plan.

Again Guild Wars dose fine with it's payment model, and even though I may not be a fan of the item shop model, or the buy-to-unlock model either, I should haven't to pay monthly period. I don't pay for Halo 3 monthly, I didn't pay monthly for Modern Warfare, and I don't pay for MW2. Sure I pay Xbox live fee but that gives me unlimited acess to a mutiple selection of games which I can pick. I don't pay monthly for Team Fortress 2 nor did I pay monthly for my time in Guild Wars. I did pay for new maps in halo and modern warare but those are comparable to the fps expansions. I don't understand why I have to, let's be honest with a game at 30+ USD with tax and you had a community of around 300k players that's 10,500,000 USD. Now World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King sold 2.8 million Copys within the first 24 hours. The Burning Crusade just as a side note sold 2.4 within the first 24 hours. Now 2.8 million x  40 USD = 112,000,000 USD. 112 million fucking dollars. Monthly. 14.99 x 12 = 178.88. Your fucking joking right? They don't need my monthly subscription. That's robbery at that point. Your milking us for money. The subscription is the milking of players.

Granted if your games sucks your going to flop, but the same thing happens with console games. That's the risk you take. Maybe if this was the case MMOs would come out with more to offer than what we get now.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it

LFGame: Upcoming

Published 2010-03-21 by june32nd.

So Allods is dead. The new patch killed it and any chance of me returning. Perfumes have a 7 day time frame than they expire and are deleted from inventory. Gear also will get cursed, you need to buy a different type of perfume to get rid of the curse. Once again it will be deleted after 7 days. Don't nickle and dime me.

Now for what I'm waiting for. Well it's a toss up. I did just get a job and get paid 10 and hour so I have some income to save to move up come june 1st, so subscriptions isn't a problem. I'm thinking about getting back into Lord of the Rings Online but here's my dilema; Why spend money on a game to tide me over for an MMO I'm looking to call home? I could save the money - for good reasons of course.

I'm currently waiting on Final Fantasy XIV, Earthrise, All Points Bulletin, Star Wars. The sad truth is I don't have the will or time to play a sandbox like earthrise. I just can't be sure I can dedicate enough time to it. I'll still give it a shot. I always enjoyed toying with the idea of playing a sandbox solo and being a great thieft or pirate. Though I can live out my thug-life dreams in APB. I don't know to much of the star wars story besides what i can sort of remember from the movies I watched when I was a kid. Final Fantasy is another I played but never finished 7,8,10,12, and currently playing and plan to beat 13. I'm not strange to Square-Enix though as I loved the first Kingdom Hearts. I always tried numerous times to get into 11 but the clunky console like UI and the lack of groups really didn't make the game to fun. The one time I did get into a linkshell another person from the shell was helping me out however, after that one day I never saw him again and he was the one who invited me into the linkshell. I love the world of final fantasy and plan to at least play all these MMOs and hope I can call one home. Still playing FFXIII and enjoying it besides the sappy and corny story line and Global Agenda, TF2, and CIV4 help kill some time.

Food 4 Thought

Published 2010-03-17 by june32nd.

Over at MMORPG I found a post and it talks about the 5 misconceptions of MMOs and players. The include the steriotype that we're all geeks. That MMOs are evolving and my favorite is that 1 million = failure. It's worth a read and worth a short post about it.
